Bound by Love: a Son, a Teacher and a Grandfather - Dr. A.K. Gupta

Dr. A.K. Gupta

There existed a time when children were treated without any inherent differences. At schools, there was no favouritism based on whether a child came from a wealthy background or from a humble family like that of a sweeper. Dr. A.K. Gupta enjoyed the same environment in Jalandhar's government school. His father was a clerk in Indian Railways. He completed his schooling from Jalandhar itself. Thereafter, his gather was transferred to Delhi, where he got the opportunity to study at the University of Delhi. Leaving behind the soil where his lovely days of school had passed was a tough shift for him. However, as the days passed, he started relishing his life at Hansraj College.

After completing his studies, he found himself in a state of confusion regarding his career. After much contemplation and soul-searching, he eventually settled on the idea of pursuing radio engineering. However, one of his teachers discouraged him, expressing that the field might become outdated in the future. Left with limited options, Dr. Gupta decided to follow his true passion, which was mathematics. His interest in the subject had been deeply influenced by his mother. Despite not being highly educated, she possessed exceptional arithmetic skills. Dr. Gupta fondly recalled the days when he would sit beside her as she knitted swearers, bombarding her with countless mathematical questions. Even though his mother is no longer with him, her memories continue to hold a special place in his heart. He cherishes the moments they shared, as well as the delicious dishes she used to cook, such as 'tamaatar ki chutney' and 'besan ke pakode'.

Afterward, Dr. Gupta decided to pursue PhD in Mathematics from IIT Kanpur. In those days scholars used to advise IIT Kanpur as the finest research institute for mathematics. There he realised the necessity of research. He believes that one must do a PhD to develop a vision of critical reflection followed by intellectual development. Subsequently, on completing his research, he joined Ramjas College, University of Delhi as an Assistant Professor. A teaching career fascinated him greatly because it helped him immerse himself in the inquisitive world of young minds. Those were days when a teacher-student interaction was very cordial. Students were accustomed to showing curiosity to learn, thereby sparking the novelty of teachers as well. He recalled those days and felt dreamy about the chirping of curious minds. Besides jumping into the world of young minds, he also dived into the ecstasy of 'Chai'. He used to indulge in a symphony of teas, sipping more than a handful each day. For him, tea was the mystifying bridge that filled the gap between boredom and intoxication. Its flavourful delight embraced him without ever veiling his consciousness. However, later he realised his deteriorating health and he left the embrace of 'Chai' with a heavy heart.

Life on the trail seems to be going smoothly until, unexpectedly, a burst of misery descends. In 1988, Dr. Gupta faced a similar episode of depression but managed to find solace in the practice of yoga. And, ever since that day, yoga transformed into his new found passion. Even in his retired life. he continues to conduct yoga classes. What once served as a means to overcome depression, has now evolved into an integral part of his lifestyle. Apart from practising yoga, he has found amity in his grandchildren during his retirement. It's often stated that grandparents are the first friends of their grandchildren, and in turn, grandchildren become the ultimate companions of their grandparents. He helps them in their studies, steadily inculcating his experience and guidance in them.

In the twilight years of his life, Dr. Gupta has found immense joy and fulfilment in the serene practice of yoga and the loving companionship of his grandchildren. With a heart full of contentment and gratitude, he continues to find happiness in the simple pleasures of life, savouring the memories of his school days, his mother's love and the joy of teaching.

Resilience Through Life’s Challenges: The Inspiring Journey of Prof. D.K. Jain

Prof. D.K. Jain at the Centenary Year Meet of the Former Faculty, 15th June 2023

Coming from the hustle and bustle of Panipat, Prof. D.K. Jain has always had a fond inclination toward this city of weavers. He has spent his most precious years of school life and graduation there. However, in the course of life, a man has to fortify his steps for the next threshold. Despite weak financial conditions, his father wanted him to pursue his post-graduation at the Shri Ram College of Commerce, University of Delhi. He gathered his emotions and left for Delhi.

With each passing day, the season unfolded a new chapter and amidst this, he got a great opportunity. Due to his excellence in academics during his post-graduation, his professor suggested sending him to Athens University, Ohio. He had the good fortune of being awarded a scholarship as well; however, he faced the unfortunate setback of having his visa application rejected by the administration. After completing his M.Com from SRCC, he then tried for the Civil Services Exam, twice. But, sometimes the flow of a river doesn’t follow the same path set by a stream. He couldn’t clear the exam and eventually started his career in academics at Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, University of Delhi. Since that moment, his veins became destined for teaching and there was no looking back.

He believes that a teacher is not someone who just delivers a lecture and goes on with it; a teacher is someone who pulls the best out of his students by making them realize the beauty of thinking. For this purpose, he has  always guided his students not to consult a help book, but to think by themselves. His dedication and passion for teaching had a profound impact in the hearts of every student he met, serving as a remarkable source of inspiration. He fondly remembers one of his students, who was very close to him, who had joined the Indian Army after graduation and got posted in Jammu & Kashmir. At that time, the army personnel were allowed to make a call for only fifteen minutes a week and the first call this newly posted army jawan made was to his beloved teacher, Prof. D.K. Jain. This moment is still deeply etched in his bundle of fond memories. A man may grow weary of wealth and material possessions, yet these timeless moments never cease to enchant his soul.

As he embarked on his professional journey, he transformed into a carefree spirit, soaring through the realms of freedom and unburdened existence. He found comfort in wandering through the streets of Connaught Place, indulging in the sacred ritual of savoring multiple cups of coffee over many splendid hours. True essence of his youthful spirit lies in a simple yet resolute proclamation: "I never saved, never borrowed." This statement reflects his principled approach to life, demonstrating a steadfastness that sets him apart. However, later he started realizing the need for saving and the beauty of leading a minimal life.

Despite experiencing numerous waves of unfortunate events in his life, Prof. Jain perseveres and overcomes them with unwavering dedication. With his commitment, he is serving as a temple of inspiration to his students, whose brilliance continues to radiate through his wise guidance.

A Humble Beacon of Generosity: Ms. Marjorie Fernandes' Journey of Empowerment and Support

Ms. Marjorie Fernandes donating at the Centenary Year Meet of the Former Faculty, 15th June 2023

In the Bible, there is a verse that says, “Do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.” This metaphor highlights the importance of acting with humility and sincerity, carrying out good deeds without seeking attention or recognition. This same principle is exemplified in the life of Ms. Marjorie Fernandes. Throughout her journey, she has been closely associated with the University of Delhi. She completed her education at Miranda House and pursued further studies at Delhi School of Economics. Following that, she devoted more than four decades of her life to teaching, at Janki Devi Memorial College, University of Delhi. During this period, she also took a paid study-leave abroad and deputation to work for the National Commission on Teachers at NIEPA. She firmly believes that the University of Delhi, and particularly JDMC, has been her solace, providing her with a joyful and fulfilling life, therefore, she decided to make a contribution to the Endowment Fund of the University of Delhi.

Life exposes us to both, a comforting embrace of love and a void of loneliness. In spite of leading a pleasant and comfortable life, Ms. Marjourie couldn’t shake the memory of a distressing incident from her past that profoundly impacted her. She recalled a married female teacher who tragically took her own life due to the unbearable circumstances at her marital home. Feeling utterly helpless and without support from her parents, she saw suicide as the only escape from her pain. Reflecting on this tragedy, Ms. Marjorie expressed her desire to use her donation to support women facing similar challenges, particularly by providing safe accommodation.

Ms. Marjorie immensely proclaims the importance of safe accommodation, especially for women. Having experienced the benefits of such assistance herself, she understood how crucial it could be. She also fondly recollected the open-mindedness and compassion of the Principal of JDMC, Dr. Sharda Jain, who was willing to bend the rules whenever the situation demanded. When Ms. Marjorie returned from Sussex University, UK, where she went for being a topper amongst the first batch of students at JNU in 1971-72, she could have easily moved to JNU. However, Dr. Sharda generously provided a teacher-flat to her. She felt glad and safe staying there. She also recalled her flatmates, who had become a close-knit family to her.

There is another instance that became Ms. Marjorie's motivation for contributing to this cause. There was a female assistant in the college who came to Delhi from a small town in Punjab after her marriage. However, the colours of her expedition turned pale as she lost her husband. She was left with the responsibility of two daughters. Her life diverged into an open sea, whose vastness of despair and uncertainty engulfed her in the blink of an eye. There used to be no accommodation for the office staff on the college campus, but once again Dr. Sharda demonstrated her generosity. She provided a big one-room set with a separate kitchen and bathroom built on the garage space of the Principal's Bungalow. Today, both the daughters are doing well as professors at the University of Delhi.

These incidents have had a profound emotional impact on Ms. Marjorie, becoming the driving force behind her contribution. In addition to this, her works also mirror the essence of Dr. Sharda, who has consistently been a beacon of generosity. It is this radiance that Ms. Marjorie continues to personify in her endeavours.
